TESTIMONIALS

“Langton Football Services opposition scouting courses provide a straightforward, friendly and easily affordable gateway to the world of football scouting. No matter what your role or level of experience within football, this course will arm you with the tools that you need to be able to put together uncomplicated, accurate reports at any level of the game. In three years I have scouted over 100 games for Langton Football Services covering everything from Mile Oak vs Selsey to West Ham United vs AFC Bournemouth and most levels inbetween!Whether you are interested in scouting for your own club, improving your own football knowledge or becoming a scout yourself, then I can highly recommend signing up to a course or a webinar run by Hugo Langton” . Darren Lovell, course attendee and opposition scout

“I couldn’t recommend the course enough. A lot of people watch football but Hugo teaches you how to see what really happens and why. Since attending the course, how I view the game has changed dramatically and I put a lot of that down to how Hugo teaches this course. If you want to learn how to think like a coach and improve your match day preparation, this is the perfect course for you”.  Daryl Paskell, course attendee and opposition scout

“Attended the course led by Hugo with a wonderful insight into scouting the opposition. Enjoyed the evening”. Ean Patterson, course attendee

“Thanks for the well organised scouting the opposition session tonight. Thoroughly enjoyable #coachingnetwork #knowlege” . Matt Drew, course attendee

I’ve found the course extremely useful. working as a coach/manager Hugo knows exactly what information teams need from a report and this comes across in the way he delivers the course. The course, along with Hugos ongoing support, has subsequently enabled me to go on and help various successful sides”.  Lee Hurrell, course attendee and opposition scout

I attended an ‘Opposition Scout’ seminar hosted by Hugo Langton at the end of the 2014/15 football season. It was just out of curiosity and a love of anything to do with football, not because I was planning on becoming a scout. I found the seminar to be really welcoming plus very interesting and informative. I then went to watch a couple of games and sent in the reports using Hugo’s template just to see what feedback I would get. He was very quick to respond and extremely encouraging. I made improvements and was then offered a position with ‘Langton Football Services’ and have been scouting opposition for clients since the start of the 2015/16 season. Being involved in scouting opposition for important FA Cup ties has especially given me a tremendous buzz, especially when I was personally thanked for some small details that helped get a client a result in their 1st Qualifying Round tie, which was worth a bit of money to the club. I thoroughly recommend the seminar/webinar even if you don’t intend on becoming a scout. A love of football is all you need to get something out of it”. Robert Runciman, course attendee and opposition scout

The importance of scouting the opposition

Knowledge is power, so they say. Some years ago I used to get out and watch games often, look at a future opponent. However, it’s difficult to be at a game and at training at the same time – in non league football it’s normal to train at night as players are usually semi professional – or indeed watch games when your own team is playing. So I needed to find a solution, which was to teach someone to go out and watch games for me, and to understand what I was looking for and why, especially as senior football is about winning. I need the edge on everyone we are due to play, I want my players to be prepared and to know how to win.

From there my network of scouts grew, and over the last 3 seasons we have supported many league winners, cup giant kills, cup runs (including two Wembley appearances), successful relegation battles and play off winners. This includes watching games in Womens football. Having information on the opposition clearly helps, last season for example we watched every single up and coming opponent for both Bromley FC and Maidstone United FC. Both clubs were crowned champions of their respective leagues recently. There are many more success stories, too many to list.

As demand for our services is growing, we need more scouts all around England. If you need training, we’ll provide you with that. You don’t need any football qualifications, just a desire to learn. However on completion of the training you can then be made available for paid work to our increasing list of clients, which includes Football League clubs. I will be running a training evening in June, details to be confirmed shortly, in the South East/London. By mid June I’m hoping to have the course content available online. This is a fantastic opportunity to get involved in senior football.

Training includes –

What to look for and why

Strengths / Weaknesses

Set plays

Transitions of play, why are they important and how to show evidence

Tips of the trade to help back up detail with evidence

Scenarios

How to put the report together

How do you win
If you are already an opposition scout, I’d love to hear from you if you are seeking extra work. More details will be made available soon. In the meantime all enquiries/interest/new customer request should be sent to langtonfootballservices@gmail.com

Decision making in the final third

Here is a multi functional session I did today with my U19 side. It’s focusses on decision making in the final third. You can adjust the session to suit by adjusting the size of the playing area or by limiting touches. It’s important to consider the physical needs of your players regarding the size of the playing area, as is number of participants.

I feel it’s important to practice shooting from distance, having the confidence to do it. Equally important though is breaking through the opponents defensive line or off side trap, that is to say the timing of the forward run. To add further realism, we add an element of crossing too into the session.

I set up as follows using half a pitch

IMG_1420.PNG

Players in two teams, here is 5v5, although I did use 6v6 today. Play starts with the goal keeper playing the ball anywhere into the playing area. Players combine to attack/defend (there will be plenty of turnovers of possession) looking to get a shot off. Players cannot shoot goal side of the cones. The one exception at this stage is that one player can enter the area should a shot rebound off the keeper/goal posts, but the rebound shot must be taken first time.

When shooting from distance I’m looking to encourage the players to be accurate (hit the target), and focus on technique (curler, chip, drive through ball with laces, volleys – head over ball for the last two). Regarding rebounds can we anticipate the rebound and convert with confidence first time

The first progression is to break through the coned line (break through a defence or spring the off side trap). So a player can be played in past the cones, but again he must shoot with a first time shot. None of his team mates can enter through the cones with him, nor can any defenders. Please note that throughout the session players can still shoot from distance, so now they need to start making realistic decisions

IMG_1421.PNG

Coaching points here would be timing of your run (you cannot already be past the cones to receive the ball (offside), combination and build up play to put a player through 1v1 against the keeper, technique of first time shot (low, hard, corners or lift the ball over the keeper etc).

You can progress the session further here by allowing one of the defensive players to try and stop the shot.

My final progression today was to add crosses. The team in possession could work the ball into the channel between the penalty area and touchline. No defender is allowed in here. The wide player is allowed a maximum of two touches to deliver the cross. The team in possession can attack through the cones to try and score, and the defending team too can go in to defend. You can obviously coach movement to attack the cross.

When an outcome is reached, play will restart again from the keeper.

2v2 defending

February 25, 2014 7 comments

Here is a situation I saw in the Brighton v Wigan game last Saturday (Feb 22) in he Championship. The Wigan player on the ball dribbles towards goal, gets a shot away and scores

20140225-144636.jpg

The problem here for me is that the two defenders are too far apart. The defender pressing the ball (B) has no back up from his team mate (A). I’ve highlighted below the area that’s a problem

20140225-144857.jpg

If the second defender (A) moves into the circle below, not only is he providing cover, but he is also in a position to defend against the other striker should he get the ball. He is also in a position to defend should the first defender be beaten on the outside, thus lessening Wigans chances of scoring.

20140225-145035.jpg

Below is a simple session you can put on for your players to improve 2v2 defending around the box. Set up as follows :

20140225-200812.jpg

Blue player on the ball passes to the red player opposite him. The ball is now live and the two blues must defend against the two reds within the coned area.

20140225-200947.jpg

Some key points here…

The blue player who passes the ball to the red player opposite him must get out quickly to be touch tight.

It’s important that the defender pressing the ball shows him either inside or outside. It makes sense here to show the attacking player on the ball outside, in order to force him out of the coned zone. If he is shown inside, then it’s important for the second defender to provide cover.

The defenders must work together, the covering defender can see the bigger picture and can direct his team mate. Whoever presses the ball must be backed up by the other.

Defenders must now back off too much, as the more they back off the more they invite the shot!

20140225-202905.jpg

An the ideal scenario defenders work in tandem, switch roles if the other attacker is on the ball

20140225-203012.jpg

A typical problem you may encounter during the session is this

20140225-203101.jpg

The distances/support between the defenders and the huge gap highlighted will need to be corrected

This is a fast moving session, you can use as many players as you want. Alternate the starting pass and change players roles over.

You can make the session more challenging at the right time to 3 strikers against 2 defenders
